Born in Buffalo, New York, Todd Bellanca's early inspirations were the snowy afternoons spent at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Fascinated by the paintings of Franz Kline, Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, and Barnett Newman, Todd began to explore the visual arts, at first through painting.
Meanwhile, at home, Sunday afternoons for The Bellanca's meant back-to-back Sergio Leone films with his Father and Uncles as his Mother and Nana created their own epic in the kitchen: the perfect Bolognese. It was during this period that Todd began to dream of making movies.
This unique combination of influences lead to Todd's crisply powerful visual eye, and his ability to mix his love of action film making with a deep sense of character storytelling.
By college Todd had begun making short films and caught the attention of film professor, Morgan Wesson, who was producing the Ken Burns documentary, "EMPIRE OF THE AIR". That summer, Todd was hired onto the film for his first professional experience.
After the completion of the film, Todd moved to New York City where his short film, "Wish You Could See My Feet" was selected for a museum tour of Europe.
He next landed a job with an IMAX production company, where Todd was encouraged to experiment with their fleet of 16mm cameras. He began to shoot punk videos for the bands he adored in the New York scene. In 1989 his video for THE LOST premiered on MTV'S 120 Minutes. This ignited Todd as a sought after music video director. But in 1991, with over 30 videos under his belt, he was ready for a change.
Todd shifted into the tv commercial arena and since then, has directed spots for Nike, Burger King, New York Tourism and countless national and International brands.
But a film maker at heart, in 1994, Todd directed "BECAUSE I AM" an award winning documentary about a young mother's battle with AIDS and her relentless mission to educate young people about the disease, as she herself succumbed to it.
In 2005, he directed his first narrative feature entitled "THE SICKNESS". Set in Bangkok, the film paints a gritty portrait of Bangkok's sex patriot scene through the eyes of an American Boxer whose unlikely kinship with a US Federal Agent brings down an international human trafficking ring.
In 2006, Bellanca launched film production venture SANGUINE & SMART with wife and partner Sasha Levinson. The duo penned and are now in development on OMERTA, a sexy, sweeping mafia drama set against the backdrop of a rural Sicilian town as it gears up for its "blood of the grape" harvest festival.
Also in development under the SANGUINE & SMART banner are feature films, THE AUDIT, SO HERE'S WHERE THE STORY REALLY BEGINS and SING SOFTLY STELLA.
